In the ancient times, weary knights fighting in wars would rest at inns along the way. The innkeeper was charged with protecting these knights from enemy knights, wizards, and dragons and for them it was a sacred duty. Innkeepers like Howard Johnson and Marriott Bonvoy who did a good job built business empires that survive today. Then, for some unknown reason, we began discouraging hotels from arming their staffs.

As conservatives, we have long understood that the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. That is why we have fought so hard to arm our nation’s teachers and soldiers, ensuring that our classrooms and military bases are no longer soft targets. But as I look around this country, I realize there is another critical sector of our economy that we have left completely defenseless: the hospitality industry.
